As salaamu alaikum my muslim friends,
My name is Amaatulah and I am 5 years old. It will soon be Ramadan and my friends and I are trying to learn all we can about this blessed month. My ummi & abu are going to let me fast as much as I am able insha’allah. How about you, will you try to fast too? Do you know about Ramadan? Let’s learn together!

So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan i.e. is present at his home), he must observe Saum (fasts) that month, and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe Saum (fasts) must be made up] from other days. Allaah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you. (He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allâh [i.e. to say Takbîr (Allâhu-Akbar; Allâh is the Most Great) on seeing the crescent of the months of Ramadân and Shawwâl] for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him. (Al-Baqarah 2:185)
The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: “ Every deed we do is multiplied. We get an even bigger reward for a good deed. Allaah, the Glorious and Majestic has said, ‘but fasting is exceptional, for it is done for HIM and Allah will give reward for it, because we give up food and things we love for His Sake. Muslim #2567
Abu Huraira reported Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) as saying: Allaah the Exalted and Majestic said: Every act of the son of Adam is for him, except fasting. It is (exclusively) meant for Me and I (alone) will reward it. Fasting is a shield. When any one of you is fasting on a day, he should neither indulge in obscene language, nor raise the voice; or if anyone reviles him or tries to quarrel with him he should say: I am a person fasting. By Him, in Whose Hand is the life of Muhammad, the breath of the observer of fast is sweeter to Allaah on the Day of judgment than the fragrance of musk. The one who fasts has two (occasions) of joy, one when he breaks the fast he is glad with the breaking of (the fast) and one when he meets his Lord he is glad with his fast. Muslim #2566

The muslims follow the Islamic calendar which is based on the moon (lunar). Each lunar month will have 29 or 30 days. When we see the hilal (the new moon) the month starts.
Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. So the start of Ramadan will change a little bit each year.
As you grow much older, you may fast in the fall, winter, spring and summer.
And even then, how long the fasting days are will depend on where you live in the world.
“The Month of Ramadaan is the month of obedience to Allaah, the time the people have to bring themselves to Allaah. Many people think that Ramadaan is the month of being lazy and laid back. That is not the month of Ramadaan, it is the month of working hard, keeping away from sins, keeping away from desires. The month of Ramadaan is the best month. It is the time that Allaah revealed the Qur’aan. It is the time when Jibreel (alayhi sallam) came to Muhammad (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) and taught him the Qur’aan…” »
This is the month we will try to fast from sunrise to sunset. A muslim does not eat or drink anything during the daylight.
Another word for fast is “Sawm”. It is the 4th pillar of Islaam.
What did you learn?

We will leave off other things and concentrate on remembrance of Allaah.
Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah – rahimahullaah – wrote, “Remembrance of Allaah is to the heart what water is to fish. What happens to a fish when it is taken out of water?” »
We will try to become closer to Allaah and be increased in emaan (faith).
We will fast sincerely hoping for Allaah's reward, and if we do Allaah has promised to forgive us for all our past sins
We will thank Allaah over and over for all the blessings we have.
We will ask Allaah to have mercy on us and forgive us.
We will make the intention to fast every night in our heart »
We will read and listen to more Qur'aan. There is so much reward for that.
Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allaah, he will have a reward. And that re"ward will be multiplied by ten. I am not saying that "Alif, Laam, Meem" is a letter, rather I am saying that "Alif" is a letter, "laam" is a letter, and "meem" is a letter." Sunan At-Tirmithee #2910
We will make extra prayers.
We will learn how to have “sabr” (be patient).
We will stay alway from bad deeds and increase in doing good deeds.
We will look at ourselves and try to better our manners and heart, and the Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) is our best example.
We will take suhoor (morning meal) as this is a blessing and will make fasting easier for us.
Narrated Anas bin Malik: The Prophet (sallahu alayhe wa sallam) said, “Take suhur as there is a blessing in it.” Al-Bukhari #1808
We will try to be more generous (giving), by feeding people and looking out for the poor and needy, those who may have less then us. This teaches us compassion (caring) and appreciation (being thankful).
Ibn 'Abbas reported that Allah's Messenger (sallahu alayhi wa sallaam) was the most generous of people in charity, but he was generous to the utmost in the month of Ramadan. Gabriel (alayhi sallam) would meet him every year during the month of Ramadin until it ended, and Allah's Messenger (sallahu alayhi wa sallaam) recited to him the Qur'an; and when Gabriel met him Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) was most generous in giving charity like the blowing wind. Muslim 30,# 5718
If your sisters or brothers bother you, be kind to them and say “I am fasting, I am fasting”.
We will do our best to be good and kind, have truthful words, be charitable and respectful. Aboo Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, "Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink (i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting.” Related by al-Bukhaaree, (31/1789
Did you know that when the Pious Predecessors would fast, they would sit in the masaajid and they would say: "We shall protect our fast and not backbite anyone"..»
Some Muslims will make umrah (the minor pilgrimage).
Your parents will pay Zakat-ul Fitr (obligatory charity given by the muslims before the 'Eid ul Fitr prayer) Narrated Ibn ‘Umar: The Prophet (sallahu alayhe wa salaam) ordered the people to pay Zakat-ul-Fitr before going to the 'Id prayer. Al Bukhari #1424 During the Prophet's time they would give one Saa' (a measure of food. It is four times what a person can hold when he cups both of his hands together) of food (edible things) as Sadaqat-ul-Fitr (to the poor). At that time it may have been barley, raisins (dried grapes), cottage cheese or dates. Related by al-Bukhaaree #1425
You may go with your parents to the masjid for taraweeh prayers (which are the special night prayers in Ramadan).
Listen to the taraaweeh prayers from Makkah. site 1 site 2 Parents please only allow children to listen when the actual prayers are being held
There is an important night that the muslims try to catch by staying up and praying called Laylat-al-Qadr ("the Night of Decree").

This night is better then a 1000 months! No one knows for sure when this night is, but we look for it during the last odd 10 nights of Ramadan.
The night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is better than a thousand months (i.e. worshipping Allâh in that night is better than worshipping Him a thousand months, i.e. 83 years and 4 months). (Al-Qadr 97:3)
'Aa'ishah asked the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), "If I am granted success in (praying during) Laylatul-Qadr, with what do I supplicate?" He replied: Çááøóåõãøó Åöäøóßó ÚóÝõæøñ ÊõÍöÈøõ ÇáúÚóÝúæó ÝóÇÚúÝõ Úóäøöí
"O Allaah, verily you are the All-Pardoning, and you love to pardon, so pardon me (of my sins, ie. forgive me)."
What did you learn?

Thahaba th-thama- o wabtallatil- Aaurooq, wathabatal - arju insha'allah
"The thirst has gone and the veins are quenched, and the reward is confirmed, if Alaah wills."
The Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) would break his fast with fresh dates, and if there were no fresh dates, dried ones and if none of those then water.
Narrated Sahl bin Sad: Allah's Apostle (sallahu alayhe wa salaam) said, "The people will remain on the right path as long as they hasten the breaking of the fast." Bukhari 31, #178

In Islaam, there are only two festivals. Eid ul Fitr is the one we celebrate at the end of Ramadan, it is the 1st day of Shawwaal.

Like we read before, the month has 29 or 30 days depending on the moon. So when the hilal (moon) of Shawwaal is sighted, your parents will tell you & you will know the eid is the next day insha’allah. When you know, then you would say "the takbeer (the saying of: Allaahu Akbar (Allaah is the Greatest)), and the tahleel (the saying of: laa ilaaha ill-Allaah (there is none truly worthy of worship except Allaah)), and the tahmeed (the saying of alhadmullilah (( Praise is for Allaah)), for that which Allaah (tabaarak wa ta'aala) (mentions): {and that you must magnify Allaah for having guided you so that you may be grateful} [Soorah al-Baqarah, Aayah 185]." anytime up until the Eid prayer. »
You will take a bath
You will wear your best clothes.
You will eat dates before going to the eid prayer.
Narrated Anas bin Malik: Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) never proceeded (for the prayer) on the Day of 'Id-ul-Fitr unless he had eaten some dates. Anas also narrated: The Prophet used to eat odd number of dates. Al-Bukhari #906
You will pray with all the muslims.
Narrated Ibn Abbas; The Prophet(sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) offered a two Rakat prayer on the Day of Id ul Fitr and he did not pray before or after it. Then he went towards women along with Bilal and ordered them to pay alms and so they started giving their earrings and necklaces (in charity).Al-Bukhari #914
Insha’allah you may have family and friends at your home later.

You and your guests can share a meal of special foods and sweets and enjoy the rest of the day together. Alhamdullilah! We thank Allaah for guiding us to Islaam and being on the straight path. May Allaah accept our worship, and prayers and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad , his family, his Companions and all those who follow him in his footsteps until the Last Day.

Discuss with your children the importance of not overeating. Just because it is Ramadan and we fast during the day, there is no need to stuff ourselves at at night. Narrated Ibn Umar that Allaah's Messenger (sallahu alahyi wa sallam)said, "A believer eats in one intestine) i.e is satisfied with a little food), and a kaafir eats in seven intestines (i.e eats too much." Bukhari #5036
"In view of the long hours of fasting, we should consume slow digesting foods including fibre containing-foods rather than fast-digesting foods. Slow digesting foods last up to 8 hours, while fast-digesting foods last for only 3 to 4 hours. Slow-digesting foods are foods that contain grains and seeds like wheat, oats, semolina, beans, lentils. Fast-burning foods are foods that contain sugar, white flour, etc. Fibre-containing foods are whole wheat, grains and seeds, vegetables like green beans, peas, fruit with skin, dried fruit especially dried apricots, figs and prunes, almonds, etc..
The foods eaten should be well balanced, containing foods from each food group, i.e. fruits, vegetables, meat/chicken/fish, bread/cereals and dairy products. Fried foods are unhealthy and should be limited. They cause indigestion, heartburn, and weight problems."
Use foods you have around the house, or pictures you find online, and let child distinguish between healthy foods and unhealthy foods. Let them pick the fruit you will have for suhoor or for iftar.
Talk about why we eat. "One of the thing we intend from eating is increasing and maintaining the strength we need to do acts of obedience to Allaah, so we do not lose the reward if we eat for pleasure alone."
Honoring our Guests
Insha'allah you may have people to your home for iftar, so we must know how to treat them our guest well.
The Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) said "Whoever believes in Allaah and the Last Day should honor his guest". Bukhari & Muslim
Encouragement to share food
Abu Dharr reported Allah's Messenger (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) commanded me thus: Whenever you prepare a broth, add water to it, and have in your mind the members of the household of your neighbours and then give them out of this with courtesy". MuslimBook 32 #6358
The blessings of eating with others
Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle “sallahu alayhi wa sallam” said, "The food for two persons is sufficient for three, and the food of three persons is sufficient for four persons." Bukhari #5034
Did you know that the Prophet ate on a leather dining sheet?
When the Prophet (sallahu alahyi wa sallam) married Safiyya, Anas invited the muslims to his wedding banquet. He *sallahu alayhi wa sallam) ordered that leather dining sheets be spread. Then dates, dried yoghurt and butter were put on those sheets. Bukhari #5029
